Why Do You Wear Makeup?

Thank you to Lena for tagging me to do this tag! This is an interesting one, because it's more personal than some of the other tags that are floating around, and it's really nice to sit down and chat/type a little ramble and have a think about why we do what we do.

I'm in the midst of packing.

1. When did you start using makeup?
2. What was the first makeup product that you bought that you loved?
3. What is your most used eyeshadow?
4. When did you begin loving makeup?
5. How do you feel without makeup?
6. What do you like about makeup?
7. Three Holy Grail items.
8. Why do you wear makeup?

1. When did you start using makeup?
I rarely wore makeup before this year apart from a couple of special occasions in high school, though I remember my introduction to makeup as a thirteen year old at rhythmic gymnastics competitions (blue eyeshadow, heart shaped sequins and hair scraped back into a high bun... eek!). I'd never seen an eyelash curler before and had to ask someone what it was for. I'd gotten excited when I'd first found my mum's old makeup bag, and had a good rummage. It was then that I learnt of brands like CoverGirl, Shiseido and Elizabeth Arden. Beyond the odd experimental play session with the products, I didn't start wearing makeup until this year.

2. What was the first makeup product that you bought that you loved?
The Revlon lip butter in Peach Parfait, definitely. I'd watched frmheadtotoe's comprehensive video on the lip butters and decided that I needed it. She was one of the few beauty Youtubers that I was subscribed to at the time and seeing as I had similar colouring I really valued her opinion on products and when she said that Peach Parfait was her favourite shade, I had to have it. They hadn't been launched in Australia yet so I ordered it from the US.

Mine's battered and well-loved- I've almost finished it.

3. What is your most used eyeshadow?
I don't wear eyeshadow too often, but mine would definitely be Maybelline's Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze. Lately, it's been the L'Oreal Color Infallible in Tender Caramel, but overall, Bad to the Bronze is my most used.

L-R: BTTB, Tender Caramel

4. When did you begin loving makeup?
This year, around May. My interest started when I was on an exchange program in Switzerland but it died down after I came back home because we weren't allowed to wear makeup in high school. It was only after I found Michelle's blog this year that I really started getting into makeup.

5. How do you feel without makeup?
I feel fine going out without makeup. I don't wear it everyday, and often don't bother wearing it to Uni unless there's a product I want to try out or my skin's kicking up a fuss. If I'm seeing family friends or high school friends, I don't mind going without makeup because they're more accustomed to seeing me without it. If I'm going to an event or meeting someone I'd want to wear a base and some mascara at the very least, but I'm comfortable going without makeup if I'm going someplace where I don't have to make a really good lasting impression, like the shops or Uni lectures. In those situations, less is more. :) Now that my initial craze phase is over and I'm content with my collection, I'm focusing more on skincare, because if you've got nice skin, why wear makeup?

6. What do you like about makeup?
I like how it can boost your confidence. I've had bad skin before (self-inflicted, I blame it on overdosing on Swiss Chocolate, which is really as good as they say) and although I didn't care to use makeup at the time, it can make a huge difference to the way you see and carry yourself if you know your imperfections are concealed. With the right products, along with diet and skincare and mindset, makeup can help you to see yourself in a different light, and give you a self-confidence that has a positive effect on others' impression of you.

7. Three Holy Grail items.
Laura Mercier Mineral Powder & Real Techniques Buffing Brush: they work great together, enough coverage, looks natural, easy to apply, wears well. Maybelline Bad to the Bronze: looks great, doesn't crease or fade, so easy to use. Lip Balm: there was a time I was prone to cracked lips; never again.
You counted? I know that's four. I could happily live with those four items. So it's justified.

8. Why do you wear makeup?
I wear makeup because it's fun, and makes me appear more put together than I am. I don't often put too much effort into my outfit, as long as it's balanced and fits the occasion I'm happy, and I never use heat to style my hair so makeup is my way of making up for it. I like the ritual (superficial, I know) of playing with the different products and looking more polished for it, with a more flawless face and a healthy glow. I don't mind a few imperfections peeking through because I still want it to look natural. I know any spots are the result of snacking and not enough sleep and water and I'm learning to achieve a nice balance of the lot so I can tuck away the concealer for good.

And that's my response done! Lena's already tagged a few of my favourite bloggers! I tag Michelle, Dawn, Tine and Sheri. Have fun doing the tag! xx

  3. Now that both you and Lena have tagged me, I guess I have to do it. :P I love Peach Parfait as well, I've nearly used all of it up which is a triumph because I rarely finish lipsticks/lipglosses. I remember when you first left a comment on my blog and you were talking about deciding to create your own makeup blog. I'm glad you've kept up with it! :) Your blog is one of my favourite blogs to read. xx

  6. I really loved your answer to #6 - the way you expressed your thoughts on that rings very true and honest. I don't know if I'm going to venture all that deeply into the world of skin care - though I did buy a bunch of Antipodes products the other day. I think my philosophy on skin care is that it's vastly more about internal things like diet, exercise, and yes, sleep and water (lol) rather than what you slap on your face and how many creams and oils and exfoliants you use. But of course it's a balance, as you say! As everything in life generally is :)

    1. I love skincare- my sister just received a little sack of Korean skincare bits and playing around with those has made me even more determined to get my skincare right. It's much more about diet, exercise and sleep and water though. I'm trying to do stuff like cut out added sugar, and dairy, and up vege and water intake but it's a baby steps one-day-at-a-time kind of job. Plus, the products are so expensive! Estee Lauder isn't even that bad compared to brands like SK-II. Like, $300. *wince*
