Favourite Mascaras

Mascara is a product I can clearly remember pining for when I was about 16, as I have puny, stick-straight, short Asian lashes. I've since gone through a few tubes of the stuff, and I think I may have found my current favourites in CoverGirl's Lash Blast Volume Waterproof and Maybelline's Full 'N Soft Waterproof. I infinitely prefer waterproof mascara formulas as they hold a curl so much better, and they don't smudge as easily. I tend to shed a tear or two when I yawn, and having panda eyes would just make a boring lecture worse, so I prefer waterproof mascaras.

The CoverGirl has the fattest wand I've ever seen and it can get a bit clumpy. It needs a bit more care in application than other ones I've tried. The trade-off is the nice amount of volume that it gives to the lashes. The Maybelline is so so easy to apply, and it gives very clean, separated lashes. The wand is thinner and the bristles are longer, and it tapers slightly, to help coat the finer lashes.  It's a nice all-rounder, as it gives a little bit of length, a little bit of volume. I've been layering Full 'N Soft over Lash Blast Volume, and it helps to take out any clumps, separate and lengthen the lashes a bit more, without taking away any of the volume. Doing the two steps is a lengthy process, so it's not something to try when running late but I've been liking the end result.

I should also mention the Shiseido eyelash curler, which I've been using for about 8 months now, and no cheapie eyelash curlers can compare- it fits the shape of my eye nicely and the curl lasts for ages, even after mascara's been removed. I've heard good things about the Koji and Shu Uemura curlers too, but I'm going to be loyal to Shiseido for a while more. :) I use Face of Australia's Gentle Make Up Remover to take off any mascara, and it's honestly the best I've come across. It doesn't sting, and it's so effective. The low price tag is just a bonus.

I'm glad my two favourite mascaras come from drugstore brands, as they're supposed to be thrown away after 3-6 months. I've tried several high end mascaras, but I didn't find them to be that much better than low end ones (though YSL's Singulier has the craziest wand I've ever seen).

  1. Lovely picks :) I've heard so much about Covergirl Lashblast!
Despite finding some good mascaras, that do hold a curl and volumize, they still don't make my lashes visible from behind my glasses so I normally don't wear mascara :P

  3. super agree on you! I don't splurge on mascara as I knew that I need to throw them away after reaching 6months so why spend on high-end for products that would later end up on the trash due to its validity ~

    1. Some are probably worth it, but I just haven't found them yet. These will do for now. :) x

  4. Ooh, I used to use the Covergirl Lashblast mascara (non-waterproof version) but it just wasn't doing much for me. I've heard great things about that Maybelline mascara, it sounds like a great everyday one! xx

  5. Both brands are not available in Italy which makes me reeeeally sad :( I'd love to try CoverGirl's mascaras one day, I've read so many awesome reviews about them. x

    1. I didn't realise these brands weren't available in Italy! At least you're not deprived of Sephora like we are! I saw a couple of Sephoras when I was Milano and I should have gone in but I didn't! :( baci x

  7. I like the idea of using two mascaras to get the best benefits of both. I'm kind of experimenting with that notion in mixing foundations as well right now. I'm using Benefit They're Real and the CG Lash Blast as my two current mascaras on rotation. I'm liking how surprisingly smudge-proof the CG is! :)

    1. Mysteriously, my mascara sometimes smudges onto the bottom lashline, but only on my right eye, the monolid. It's quite a pain, I'm seeing if primer will help. The CoverGirl is impressive- I hoped the waterproof formula would help with curl! I heard the regular formula fell short in that aspect. :/ xx

  8. I've not tried either of these, I actually don't tend to use waterproof mascaras at all as regular formulations don't smudge on me. Lucky I guess. I like the Face of Australia remover as well, it is such a great cheapie :)
