Shiseido Dual Balancing Foundation

When a friend gave me a bottle of Shiseido's Dual Balancing Foundation, I thought she was crazy for being so generous. I'd never tried a Shiseido foundation, and I haven't heard much about this one, but as always, it was so exciting to try out.

L-R: Neutrogena Healthy Skin liquid makeup in 60 Natural Beige, Shiseido I20 Natural Light Ivory, Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum in 53, Skin79 Super+ hot pink Triple Functions BB Cream

Shiseido says it's a long-lasting, oil-free formula that can balance out combination skin by increasing moisture in dry areas and minimises shine in oily areas for a semi-matte finish and medium coverage. (Sounds perfect, doesn't it?!) It has SPF15. 'Formulated with Optimal Balance Network, which includes the exclusive ingredient complex of Hyaluronic Acid, Hydro-Wrap Vitalizing DE Complex to promote ideal moisture levels in skin's dry areas. Contains Prismatic Nano-Powder to increase luminosity and conceal pores. Glides on smoothly and stays crease-free. Recommended for normal and combination skin.'

I have the shade I20 Natural Light Ivory, and looking at the shade range here, I thought I'd be quite a way darker on the scale, but surprisingly, Natural Light Ivory matches me. The Ivory, or I in the I20, is the neutral shade range, as opposed to the yellow-based Ochre line. I think this will be more of a winter shade for me. After using the yellow-leaning Bourjois shade 53 for so long, a more neutral shade is a nice change.

The finish is supposed to be semi-matte, semi-dewy, but it's distinctly more matte. It blends easily, dries and sets quickly, provides medium coverage and feels light on the skin. The 'Prismatic Nano-Powder to increase luminosity and conceal pores' claim is dubious and I don't think it's any different to other bases. I can't say it's long-lasting, but as the weather's hovering around 30+ degrees and my skin greases up after 30 minutes outdoors and any makeup I've got on basically breaks down, it'll probably fare better in other climates. It'll be interesting to see if the hyaluronic acid 'Hydro-Wrap Vitalizing DE Complex' helps with dry patches in winter. The packaging is so unique. Shiseido's other foundations all have dinky little bottles too. I love the violet, silver speckled lid that fades to a darker purple towards the right side and the shape of the bottle. It's so classy and in typical Japanese fashion, aside from the lack of a pump, the aesthetic of the packaging doesn't let it down. I think there are two variations of this- they don't stock it at Australian Shiseido counters, but the American version has SPF17, while the European version has SPF15.

At the moment, I've kind of neglected wearing makeup on a day-to-day basis, but when I do wear it, I've been using my Skin79 Super+ Triple Functions BB cream almost exclusively. However, when the cooler months roll around and whatever tan I've got now begins to fade, I'll definitely be reaching for this foundation. :)

  1. I've never heard of this foundation, thanks for the review!
If my friend gave me a Shiseido foundation... my first words would be "what's wrong with it?" haha :)

    1. Haha Sheri, that's what I was thinking. I would be terribly suspicious if someone gave me a Shiseido foundation!

    2. It was gifted to her and it was the wrong shade! I'd seen it in a haul video somewhere on Youtube, but I hadn't heard anything about it. I quite like the formula though! :) x

  2. How generous of your friend. :P I've been using my Skin79 BB Cream almost exclusively too and neglecting all of my foundations... Which is bad considering I have two more in mind that I want to buy. :/ xx

    1. Hehe it's crazyy. I only own a couple of foundations, but I know I've got too many and I can't get through them all! I'm still trying to get through my original bottle of Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum, but the BB Cream is so much nicer to wear in summer! :) xx

  3. This Shiseido foundation looks lovely, how lucky of you to have a friend give it to you! I can definitely see how the shade is neutral, especially compared to the Bourjois foundation. BB creams are so easy to use so I understand why you would use it in the lazy summer haha :P

    1. Such a lazy summer! The Bourjois is very yellow-leaning, but it's a good match now. :) xx
