Not Worth The Hype

Whether it's blogger hype, Youtube hype (blind reliance on MissGlamorazzi and her oily skin) or advertising, products are often made out to save skin or enhance eyes beyond compare. Thanks to idiosyncrasy, what works amazingly for someone else may very well perform tragically on another. I'm not saying these won't work for everyone, they just underwhelmed when I used them.

L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara
Lioele Water Drop BB Cream

Caudalie Divine Oil
I really wanted to like this because so many people love it but I'm indifferent. Its multi-tasking 'face. body. hands' line doesn't make a difference to me because I've tried it on dry patches and it's too rich and greasy, but on the ends of my hair it doesn't seem to have an effect. It's very strongly fragranced and I'm not in love with the scent.

Wet n Wild Color Icon 8-Pan Comfort Zone palette
This was something I wanted to get my hands on for ages and when I finally had it shipped to me, I never touched it. I made an effort to use it but only ever liked the shimmery highlight and the peachy eyelid shade. The shades aren't versatile enough for some skin-tones and the darker 'definer' shades are too smokey for daywear.

L'Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara
ViviannaDoesMakeup singlehandedly shot this mascara to fame and I found it on sale at Myer for half the price it would normally cost (there is no way I'd pay $26 for a L'Oreal mascara). The brush is a flexible comb-style wand that holds a lot of product and I usually wipe excess product off with a tissue to achieve natural, defined, separated lashes but I can't do that with this brush. When I tried it, I was disappointed in the separation and the volume. From my experience mascara usually gives one or the other, but this mascara gave neither. It did lengthen but it didn't separate the lashes. The formula holds a curl very well and it doesn't smudge, even on me and my wayward tendencies when it comes to primer. I'd say this mascara would be good for those with full (as in, many) but not necessarily long lashes, wanting length and curl. It could suit Asian lashes very well, if you don't mind a slightly clumpier look.

Maybelline Dream Matte Powder
Bought after hearing rave reviews, this is a powdery powder. Decent oil control properties, but it doesn't meld into the makeup nicely and it sits very visibly on top of the skin. I hit pan months ago and I'm just trying to use it up.

Revlon Photoready BB Cream
I was trying to find alternatives for the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser to avoid spending $60 on it so when cheaper brands attempted to create BB creams, I tried the Revlon version.  No. It's orange-leaning and it has a disappointingly short wear time, fading after about three hours.

Lioele Water Drop BB Cream
The gimmick of this formula is the little water droplets that form when it's blended into the skin. When I first got it I said I didn't know if I think it's cool or a complete waste of time and I'm going to conclude that it's a waste of time. The shade- though more natural than the initial grey of the Skin79 BB creams- is very pink once blended in and it doesn't oxidise as much as the Skin79 varieties so the overall result is a bad colour match. It also underwhelms in wear time. When it comes to Korean BB creams I've got a holy grail in Skin79's Super+ Triple Functions BB Cream. I've repurchased the Skin79 and will continue to do so.

  1. I can't believe that you didn't like the Wet N Wild Palette! I've been trying to get my hands on it for ages (but don't want to pay the shipping costs). At least now I don't want it as much anymore :P

    1. The shipping from Beautyjoint was $7-8? But it had been out of stock for ages so I just went for it without caring. WnW shadows are pigmented but I didn't choose a palette with colours that I would get a tonne of use out of.

  2. Awww too bad these didn't work for you! I just used my friend's wet n wild palette yesterday in comfort zone and I love it! But I agree that there's too many dark shades.
    Great post though!

    1. Thanks! WnW shadows are well-formulated, but this palette just didn't suit my tastes!

    1. It's so expensive! I prefer more separation but she loves it for a reason!

  4. Comfort Zone is a very dark and sultry palette. And all the shades are shimmery. I think you might have liked on of their trios better.
I don't like Maybelline's Dream Matte powder at all either. It gives you that obvious powdery look and the coverage isn't that great.

    1. Dream Matte isn't what people make it out to be. And I agree- Walking on Eggshells may have suited my tastes better. xx

  5. I have to agree with you completely on the mascara! It really doesn't do much for my lashes, and oddly it smudges really badly on me! I've tried it with a few different foundations and powdered under my eyes really well but still end up with smudges! Very annoying considering it is WP - maybe I got a dud tube? But I really dislike the brush too. I still really want to get the W&W palette (succumbing to the hype!), maybe one of their trios as well.

    1. That's odd! Did you use eyelid primer? Sometimes that helps. Maybe it's just yours. I found the best and most water/oil-proof mascaras are the Japanese kind. :)

  8. I'm sorry you didn't like these products. Sometimes it just sucks to purchase something w/such high hopes :/ I actually enjoy using the telescopic mascara from loreal. I find it suits me well haha

    1. It's good that it works for you! It just doesn't suit my short, straight lashes.
