Public Powder Room

Smudging out eyeliner, lashing on mascara and touching up lipstick aren't uncommon sights on trains and buses, and I can't truthfully say I haven't done the same when my skin isn't its best and my tardiness is worse. Hand sanitiser is absolutely essential, as are tissues, and I have a small makeup pouch in my tote that I stuff on-the-go beauty essentials into so that if I'm in dire need of some products I have them at hand.

If I ever had to put a name to the face I wear on a daily basis it would fit into the unoriginal category of 'no makeup' makeup. It's the ironic 'I tried to look like I didn't try' kind-of even skintone, kind-of filled-in brows left a little unpolished and maybe a sweep of bronzer or subtle blush to add some colour without adding actual colour, but you can't really tell. To achieve the 'I wish I didn't wake up this morning with a giant spot on my chin, please ignore it, it happens to everyone, let me repeat this mantra and act natural' peace of mind, these are the products I use (sometimes touching up the concealer in a public toilet at Uni, oh how glamorous).
To hide redness, discolouration and blemishes I keep the Bourjois Healthy Mix Correcting Concealer in 53 Dark Radiance handy because it's easy to blend with fingers and can cover blemishes and redness effectively. Its medium coverage sometimes means applying another layer but it's not drying and it's not cakey. One of my favourite budget buys is the Australis Creme Colour for Cheeks and Lips and this one is Flirtatious Pink, a gorgeous warm peachy pink. Once blended it leans more tawny peach than pink and the minimal silver shimmer shows through but it's easy to blend with fingers and the compact plastic tin is travel-friendly. Depending on the weather, if I feel my concealer may break down or slide off the blemish I sweep a bit of Bourjois Healthy Balance Unifying Powder in 53 over the t-zone with an Ecotools Mineral Powder Brush (from the 5-piece set). I agree that this powder can oxidise but it's nothing chronic on me so it appears passable. I like the consistency and texture of this powder and prefer it to many I've used in the past, though if I repurchase I'll buy 52 instead.

The first of the other two products to finish off the minimalistic, 'no makeup' face is Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil in Brown Black. It's smaller than the Lioele eyebrow pencil that I usually use and available locally so I prefer to bring this one out with me lest I lose the Lioele, which I had to order from eBay. As said by Jeremy Renner, "Brows, lashes, lips. Frame the face". So with brows covered and lashes imperceptible behind my glasses, for lips I keep the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in Rose Shimmer in my bag for a subtle gloss. As is the Clarins way, it's a very elegant, understated sheen, no sparkles, no weird plumping effect. Does the job of a balm and gloss in one, and the gorgeous luxe tube means no sticking grubby fingers into a pot, as much as I adore the Korres Jasmine lip butter I can't stand using it when I'm not in the comfortable cleanliness of my own room with a box of tissues and a bathroom nearby.

All the items I lug around with me, in excess

  1. Good picks. I hardly ever apply any makeup when I'm out so I just have a few lip products strewn around my bag. You've hit pan on that blush - it must be good. x

    1. Thanks! And true that- more often than not I just go it barefaced but when I've got particularly angry skin I try to spare people the misfortune of seeing me without concealer hah. And I do like the cream blush from Australis, it's a good budget buy.

  2. Nice assortment - I can't understand why people lug around whole bags of foundation and stuff! I pretty much never touch up mostly due to laziness. I only tend to carry around my lip product.

    1. I usually have about 3-4 lip products rolling around the bottom of my bag lol I'm a 'just in case' kind of packer so I like to be prepared for touch-ups even though I don't always bother.
