Dull Violet

I love Laura Mercier because everything I've tried from the brand has been fantastic. Mineral makeup, concealer and a Second Skin Cheek Colour have all been great; so when I was doing a StrawberryNet order recently I threw in the Laura Mercier Eye Colour Duo in Violet at an incredibly good price.

You get what you pay for rings true in this instance. Though they bear the Laura Mercier name, I was disappointed with the quality of the shadows, but it wasn't a surprise because of the price I paid. The weird sealing-off in the darker pan is due to me trying to see if they would be any better applied wet vs applied dry, but they're even less pigmented when used wet- and I tried both water and Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Makeup Sealer spray. They're dusty and weak, though the darker violet shade redeems itself a little when used with a brush instead of swatched with fingers, and is a shade suited to contouring the socket where it has a nice 'muted'- read soft-and-wishy-washy- effect.

The lighter shade is very pretty- reminscent of the bottom shade in the Wet 'n' Wild Color Icon Trio in Silent Treatment, which was wildly popular a couple of years ago. It's only any good when built up to 2-3 layers but looks very pretty on the lids. I'm fairly sure these are old stock, sitting around in the StrawberryNet warehouse for months, if not years, because the new Laura Mercier eyeshadows come in packaging that allows the pan to pop out and be fitted into their 'well' palette frames to form a customisable palette. Perhaps in the future when I am in dire need/desperate want for a particular shade or palette, I'll indulge in current collections from Laura Mercier, but I think this dabble has been enough of new shadows for a person who rarely wears the stuff.

  1. Oh these do look pretty! I love taupe shades like these, but yea, the pigmentation doesn't look that great. Sad because it's Laura Mercier so you would expect better quality!

  2. I've loved everything else from Laura Mercier! Their Caviar eye sticks looks really good- the one in Amethyst especially. You might like that shade as it's a gorgeous purplish taupe and right up your alley! x
