Balancing Act

This is going to be a post about managing combination skin in an Australian summer when it's raining, and humid, and cold, and hot under the singeing sun. I have acne-prone combination skin that's finally calmed down after dealing with acne from the age of 15-16 and I've found a good selection of products that have work to handle the dehydrated, dry, oily and acneic bits that come along with having combination skin.

I've spoken about my current routine in this favourites post- cleansing with the Bioré Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser; treating and preventing acne with the Benzac 5% Benzoyl Peroxide water-based acne gel; and treating hyperpigmentation with the La Roche-Posay Sensi White Essence, so apart from those, this post is about the other products in my routine.

The Dry
After cleansing I pat my face dry with a towel and apply a few drops of the Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion all over my face. I've spoken about this product a lot in the past year and for good reason- it looks like water, and it feels a lot like water but this viscous hyaluronic acid solution is simply the best thing I've found at keeping skin hydrated and happy without the heavier texture of creams and moisturising lotions.
If you need something more than an all-over thin layer of hydration, the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream is a great basic moisturiser for the apples of the cheeks where it gets dry and a little flaky. It's the perfect texture to dab onto dry bits of the face when something like the Hada Labo doesn't quite cut it and when something like the Origins Drink Up Intensive is too rich.

The Oily
Oils are good. Especially for combination skin. Lovely plant-based oils, as Caroline Hirons would say. My skin used to be extremely oily and it's since become quite normal/combination thanks to rosehip oil. The Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+ is great, and absorbs into the skin quickly without feeling greasy. The Antipodes Joyous Protein-Rich Night Replenish Serum was part of the mini duo pack available at Priceline and not only is it an awesome serum, but the mini size works out to be great value for money as well. I use these products about once a week in the warmer months, as my skin needs it far less than in winter, when I use it everyday.

The Sunscreen
It's so important to use sun protection on your face to prevent cell damage. My favourite is Biore's UV Perfect Face Milk for its high SPF and lightweight texture. Facial sunscreens do have their merits because the general sunscreen's thick texture could clog pores and cause irritation and breakouts.

The Treatment
I'm a strong believer in using products to treat acne and blemishes- I don't think leaving them alone unaided is a natural help. I've been using Mario Badescu's Buffering Lotion on the more stubborn, hormonal spots and I find it's been great to speed up the recovery process.
